March 1995

Al-Hijrah Mosque was established by Al-Hijrah Trust – Birmingham by purchasing property No: 59 Hob Moor Rd, Small Heath, Birmingham, B10 9AZ (UK) in March 1995 and converted it to Mosque to meet the local community’s communal and religious needs.
Al-Hijrah Mosque is one of the early registered mosques of Birmingham (Reg No: 79385), The Mosque is located in Small Heath vicinity, south of Birmingham in an area that is heavily populated by Muslims. Muslims arrival in Small Heath was during the 1960s (after the 2nd World War). The original size of the mosque was large enough to accommodate between 50 – 60 worshipers.
Since 2001
As years passed; the number of the worshippers increased to more than 350 worshippers, the current mosque building which was sufficient to accommodate between 50-60 worshippers only could not meet the ever increasing demand of the local residents. For this reason, we sometimes held more than one congregation for the daily prayers. Since the year 2002, we have been, regularly, performing the Friday prayers in Al-Hijrah school halls which are nearby, which are also used for school classes during the weekdays and for weddings and other social gatherings on weekends.

Since 2004
Due to the small size of Al-Hijrah mosque, we have to hire Al-Hijrah school’s halls which are near by for the Holy month of Ramadhan to perform Asr, Maghrib, Isha and the Taraweeh prayers. For this reason we applied to Birmingham City Council for the extension of a double story building to the mosque building (59 Hob Moor Road) to both sides, towards St. Benedicts Road also towards the car park along with two minarets as a symbol for the Mosque.
Since 2006
Keeping in mind the ever increasing number of Muslims in the area and for the purpose of meeting the Muslim community’s long term needs, it was realised that the current proposed extension would not be sufficient enough for long term, particularly since more Muslims began to arrive to the area from neighbouring European, African and Arab countries. For these reasons, we were obliged to plan for even larger extension that can accommodate the ever increasing demands of Muslims also for long term. It is for this, we purchased the next door property to the mosque (61 Hob Moor Rd – 5 Bedroom House), so that the full extension of the Mosque can accommodate approximately 800 worshipers.
Since June 2007
After 2 years of struggle, Alhamdulillah, we have finally achieved the approval of extending a double story building of the mosque with two minarets. The extension will be built towards St. Benedicts Road as well as towards the car park of Al-Hijrah school.
